Blizzard/Activison CEO admits AION competitive threat
Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey says that despite the promise of holiday success for games like DJ Hero and Tony Hawk: Ride, Activision's year end could see some snags -- chief among them the increasing likelihood that Starcraft II won't make this calendar year.
Although Blizzard's not yet pinned a specific release date for the game, it's maintained a 2009 window. But Starcraft II lead designer recently told consumer weblog Kotaku that the team plans to have a beta that will last "four to six months," leading Hickey to conclude: "We find it increasingly probably that the game will be released in [Activision's] fiscal '10 period."
Hickey also called CEO Bobby Kotick's recent warnings that Activision could withdraw PlayStation 3 support by 2011 with no price cut "likely a realistic reaction to a near term breakdown in market growth."
If hardware pricing stays high, Hickey says, it "could eventually compromise holiday sales expectations."
"While we expect price cuts from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo before the holiday, the ultimate timing and magnitude remain uncertain," he adds.
According to Hickey, other areas of caution are a recent boost in Activision insiders selling shares -- "impossible to ignore," he says -- and increasing challenges for World of Warcraft.
The analyst says that although the number of WoW players in China is higher, the average revenue per user is lower due to the specific business model -- and downtime in the transition from operator The9 to rival Netease could cause the player base to take a hit, even though the migration will mean higher royalties in the end.
"We view looming competition in the West from new MMORPGs as a greater threat to WoW’s future then the current transition," he adds, including NCsoft's September launch of Aion as a possible competitive threat.
Well doesn't Aion already have some 2.5 million users worldwide now? I could see at least another 500k added to that with the US release, and a million or more at best (AoC did that I think).
Wow is just so old and grindbased... even all the new content they release is the same old crap. I want wingies danget. ><
One thing I do like about WoW is their localization/marketing team. Its kinda funny hearing about World of Warcraft Mountain Dew on the radio. Wonder if Aion is going to do some of the marketing things like they did in China and Korea. I want my Aion Coke! XD
Blizzard is getting set to announce their new WoW Expansion at Blizzcon.
Aion will take some subscribers from WoW, no doubt. But it won't be anywhere near enough to knock it off the top spot.
Also, Aion isn't very PvE friendly, in comparison to WoW. That coupled with the much higher system requirements means nothing will change, really.
Yeah WoW isn't going away anytime soon, much less going to be toppled. I always see that in comments and forums that some upcoming MMO is going to overthrow WoW, but it never came to be. Aion is the only MMO though that I think has the potential to beat WoW's numbers worldwide, but probably not in the US, and frankly I don't care. Just so long as Aion keeps improving and getter better over time.
As long as Aion has enough players to make for competitive servers without large queues and a solid economy, and content patches to balance and improve the game, what the hell do we care what happens to wow? If WoW goes south and all the e-tards from there come to Aion, I think it will be /wrists for a lot of people.
Everyone said that Warhammer was supposed to kill wow , look at that game... l o l,
And now ppl say Aion will kill wow , its all the same , Aion is far better then war yes but wow is just so evolved from itself , any mmo can get ther, they just need the time put in , and wow has many many years under its belt.
despite all that im still not gonna play it ,I played it for 3 years , if I can get 3 years outa Aion then damn , it was a awesome game I will say
Yeah, the best thing Aion can do to expand its player base is add more quests at the later levels.
There was a graph showing how much exp you got from quests and how much you needed to grind at each level past 40 and you only get something like 10% from quests per level. I know with some of the patches they've put out they keep adding more quests, and I hope they continue to do so. Straight grinding mobs with no purpose is awful :(
At least they are smart enough to realize its a threat
The problem is do they have what it takes to compete
