The potential of Aion!
Yeah I hear you, and completely agree. For WoW it wasn't just the fact you had to purchase expansions.. For me it was the gameplay severely decreased with each one. Oringal WoW, level 60 cap was legit, and judging by the other 2 expansions, it should've stayed there imo. Burning Crusade was ok, not going to lie but still didn't live up to the experience found back at 60. WotLK was just like "Ok Blizz.. wtf are you doing?" There are way more cons outweighing pro's with that expansion from my point of view. As you said they're digging their own grave and I think Aion will be filling the dirt back in.
As for the addons issue, i'm sure eventually some sort of addon(s) may be released.. But we'll see, it's pretty legit as-is imo.
I voted for the first option in the poll, since the other two assume a zero-sum relationship between Aion and WoW, which I don't think is necessarily true. Aion is truly a beautiful game, and so far leveling has been different enough to be enjoyable ... but I think it does remain to be seen what the end-game/meta-game will be like and wether they will be compelling enough for Aion to survive on its own merits ...
As far as WoW goes, I think it's going through a logical lifecycle where it becomes tougher and tougher to meet customer expectations that WoW itself raised to fairly high standards. I myself still love leveling toons through it because of the environment and lore involved. The end-game has turned into "meh" unfortunately, and I don't really see a way for Blizzard to resurrect it to its former glory without alienating a customer base now used to current end-game content ...
But, as someone pointed out earlier on these boards, the only thing that will really kill WoW is WoW or Blizzard's forthcoming "next gen" mmo ... Aion may provide great competition, which would be wonderful, but I don't think that alone will kill WoW, or even necessarily hurt it that much. I get the *impression* that a lot of former WoW players anticipating Aion are just that: "former" -- they've already left the game and are looking for something to fill the void -- so Blizzard has already lost those customers, for the time being at least ...
Anyways, the potential is definitely there for Aion to make a huge impact in the genre. They've got a lot of interesting ideas that hopefully NCsoft can realize in a practical and enjoyable sense. So far it looks great, runs great, and plays great. I'm optimistic =)
I voted for the first one though because even though I want Aion to succeed you can never tell these days... a lot of games have failed because they either didn't have enough content, had a lot of bugs, things just didn't work out right (like sieges that were suppose to be fun just turn into whoever has the biggest zerg wins), etc.
I am getting tired of people comparing other MMOs to WoW. I play other games hoping it isn't like WoW. I personally think WoW is so popular because it has a low level of difficulty and having something for everybody... except role-players and hardcore PvP'ers I heard. Other successful MMOs aren't as successful as WoW because they are not as easy as others would like, they don't have something for everyone, don't fit the genre of some people's preference, etc.
LOL most of my hate for WoW doesn't come from the game itself... I know it was successful... but it comes from its community. I hate the l33t speak, cocky WoW players... and it makes it even worse if they are like 12 y/o which is why I join an adult guild in everygame since I turned 18 in 2004.
I went with option 1 since I dont care if it effects WoW and I cant know if it will be amazing. I think WoW will be around for a very long time, but possibly its numbers will drop off. I mean EQ has been around for 10 years, its not nearly as big as it once was but still. Then again if WoW droped to something like 500k and Blizzard decided it was not worth supporting anymore(few patches, no more expansions/addons) that could cause WoW to not make it to a decade.
Do ketchup sales spell the death of mustard?
I have my issues with aion (mainly addons) but i doubt Aion will fail like some of the more recent mmo's
Addons just let people make it easy mode for stuff that should be simple anyway, and was just Blizzard's way of getting programming for their game done for free. I for one am glad Aion does not, and hoepfully never will, support addons.
I will only say that even though I use several add-ons for WoW, I agree with the notion of no add-ons for Aion at all ... things just seem a lot cleaner that way and everyone playing is limited/benefited by the same interface and functionality ...
I think it has the potential to completely destroy WoW.
I don't think it will.. I'd say it's going to come off as a serious competitor, though.
I think Aion has a ton of potential. But.... when Star Wars: The Old Republic is released, I can see player numbers diving. I think until that time it will syphon off a ton of players from WoW.

WoW will die soon, when an mmo starts pumping out paid expansions it begins digging its own grave.
